Edwin M. Knowles Lidded Pitcher c. 1915
Edwin M. Knowles China Co. Coffee pot, c. 1915. The form of the pot and the green decoration show strong but simple and beautiful arts and crafts era design. The first Edwin M. Knowles plant was founded in 1900 in Chester, WV, with offices in E. Liverpool, OH. The production moved to Newell, WV in 1913 and continued there until 1963. The plants were known as some of the most modern and best equipped factories in the industry. This coffee pot is practically like new – no chips, cracks or repairs. Some micro-flea bite size glaze flecks/scratches appear in the green decor. No pottery losses. It makes one wonder whether this pot was ever used -- no stains! The mark indicates the piece was fired to the vitreous level, which means it is permanently water tight. Crazing exists in the clear over glaze.
